This hotel has three big things going for it! First, is in the town of Como directly across the street from the boat dock where boats take visitors to Bellagio, Cadenabbia (to visit Villa Carlotta and Villa Balbianello and the gardens at each), Comacina Island (a really fun place for lunch or dinner where meals are served in large quantities family style and there is no choice of menu), and the picturesque town of Bellagio, an excellent place for lunch and browsing the shops.
Second, the town of Como is the silk capital of Italy and is full of wonderful independent boutiques, trattorias and ice cream shops. One can visit a silk shop or a silk factory. Additionally, there is a wonderful market three days per week – Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. And the hotel is literally in front of the town so one can easily walk anywhere.
And the third reason is the management of the hotel: the hotel's manager Cristina surrounds herself with outstanding staff who are helpful from check-in until departure. They take great pride in looking after their guests. And the popular Bar della Terme restaurant's manager, Maurizio, is THE George Clooney look-alike and has a second life posing with guests. The interior of the restaurant is cozy, but weather permitting, there is also a large terrace which is also popular with the local residents, always a good sign.
JDB's favorite rooms are the deluxe rooms and junior suites that were created a several years ago and are all done in white with large bathrooms. These rooms, together with the hotel's sister Villa Flori, are the best accommodations in Como. They feature every guest comfort, and there are connecting rooms for families. Some of the accommodations face the main piazza where there are occasional concerts and events that can be easily viewed without leaving one's room. White Night, which takes place one night in June, is an all night festival full of street vendors and music when people stay up all night!
The hotel is 45 minutes from MXP airport making it a great option for a last night or two in Italy. The hotel is open year round, and winter days on the lake can be beautiful and uncrowded.
