Ballymaloe House
Ireland: Southern Ireland: County Cork: Shanagarry
One of the most famous family run country house hotels in Ireland, Ballymaloe House is noted for its outstanding hospitality and superb food. The 17th century house built on a Norman Keep is nestled in a 400 acre estate in rural East Cork. The 32 bedrooms come in all shapes and sizes, from large and airy to cozy. As each room is unique, it is given a name, not a number. The downstairs rooms at the back of the house are newer, larger and have private terraces overlooking the river. The courtyard rooms are situated in an independent, attractive, old building, beside the main house, where three of the rooms have small adjoining conservatories. It is perfect for families or couples traveling together. Ballymaloe House is also known for Ballymaloe Cookery School & Gardens, run by Tim and Darina Allen. Not only are cooking classes available but they offer an excellent craft and specialist kitchenware shop on the premises. Food for their restaurant is mostly produced on the farm, where they specialize in natural products. Their restaurant has won high recommendation in all important restaurant guides making it one of Ireland's best restaurants. Dinner is often followed by traditional music in the drawing room. There is a small golf course on the premises, and you are within easy reach of several other championship golf courses nearby. The property is only 20 miles from the historic city of Cork and minutes from the breathtaking south coast. Sea and river fishing can be arranged within 5 – 20 miles. They have an outdoor heated pool for use in the summer. Ballymaloe welcomes children of all ages. Children are free to borrow some "wellies", roam the farm, feed the pigs, collect eggs and make friends with the family pets. Children's tea is served daily at 5:30pm and is always a fun social event.
