Enniscoe House
Ireland: Central Ireland: County Mayo
Enniscoe House is listed as a Heritage House of Ireland and has passed through twelve generations of the family, staring in the 1600's to the present owner, Susan Kellett. She has now been joined by her son, DJ Kellett. The family portraits, antique furniture, open fires, good food and wine, and a warm welcome, all contribute to the pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. The house is situated on the shores of Lough Conn, with attractive views of the lake across the parkland. Request one of the three large bedrooms facing the front of the house as these have lake views and large canopy or poster beds. There are paths through the mature woodland to the lake where the Fishery Manager can make arrangements for Ghillies (fishing guides), boats, equipment and anything else needed to fish for the plentiful brown trout or salmon found in Lough Conn. One farmyard now houses a small agricultural museum, tearoom and shop, and also sports a small genealogy center that researches names and families of Mayo origin. The old walled garden has been restored, and another garden produces organically grown vegetables. Susan's wholesome 5-course dinners change daily and make good use of local produce in dishes like timbales of smoked salmon with cucumber salad, curried courgette soup and , a delicious house specialty, free-range pork roast with apricot and walnut sauce. Besides cycling, hiking or horse back riding to explore the beautiful countryside, there are three golf courses nearby. The one in Ballina is especially good.
