PARIS, France - Private Countryside Tours

JDB Tours do not have to be booked in conjunction with a hotel booking. Most vehicles used for tours are Mercedes E-class, Daimler-Chrysler C300, Mercedes V-class and the Volkswagen Caravelle. However, JDB Ground retains the right to substitute a different vehicle type if necessary. Tour itineraries are subject to change due to site closings, inclement weather, strikes or other unforeseen circumstances. JDB Ground reserves the right to substitute a venue or site during a tour in the event the scheduled site is not available. In rare instances it may be necessary to reschedule the starting time of the tour; in such situations, clients will be notified in advance.

Entrance fees to museums and exhibits are not included in the rate unless indicated, nor are gratuities for drivers and guides. The guide will meet clients at their hotel, unless another meeting point is designated in the itinerary. Rates are subject to change.

Versailles
4 Hours
You will be met at your hotel by our expert driver/guide for the trip to Versailles. During the 40 minute drive, the history of the Palace and the century of the "Sun King" will be discussed. Upon arrival in Versailles, the guide will escort you to the entrance of the States Apartments for a private tour. Then enjoy a visit of the Palace gardens and the park, and a drive by the Trianons and the Queen hamlet village before returning to Paris. Tour begins at either 8:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. Preference for either morning or afternoon tour must be indicated at the time of booking. Tour not available on Mondays.

Giverny
5 Hours
You will be met at your hotel by our expert driver/guide for the trip to Giverny. During the one hour drive, your guide will introduce you to the art and culture of Impressionism. Upon arrival in Giverny you will have a guided tour of the flower garden, the Japanese bridge, Monet's house and studios (guides are not allowed to enter) and the Musee des Impressionnistes. On the return to Paris, visit the village of La Roche Guyon and the magnificent landscape along the river Seine. Tour begins at 1:30 p.m. and is available daily from April 1 to October 31.

Fontainebleau

One of the most elegant and beautifully decorated chateaux in France, Fontainebleau began as a hunting lodge in the 10th century, and soon became a favorite of French kings. Every inch of this 1900 room Palace is magnificently decorated with wood paneling, gilded carvings, frescoes, tapestries and paintings. En route, your guide will relate the Palace history from Francois 1st, who began its rebuilding as a Palace in 1527, through Napoleon's abdication as Emperor of France in 1814. With an audio guide, visit the lavishly furnished States Apartments, and then enjoy a guided tour of the majestic gardens. Return to Paris via the charming village of Barbizon, which gave inspiration to such painters as Corot, Millet and Rousseau.

Chartres

The magnificent Cathedral of Chartres, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the world's greatest surviving examples of 13th century Gothic architecture. Its two spires, one Gothic and the other Romanesque, tower above the medieval town of the same name. Its breathtaking interior is illuminated by 176 stained glass windows that depict the events of the Apocalypse, the life of the Virgin Mary, and the Last Judgment. Most date to the 13th century, but a few windows from the original 11th century structure still remain. After a visit to the Cathedral, you will enjoy a walk through the medieval town that surrounds it before returning to Paris, driving through the beautiful French countryside.

Chantilly

Chantilly is best known for its chateau set on an island in a lake surrounded by parklands, gardens and acres of forest. The Palace is a museum in itself, with a treasure of over 1000 paintings, drawings and etchings from such artists as Raphael, Ingres, Wateau, Poussin, and Delacroix. It has a priceless library of over 30,000 valuable books, and a remarkable collection of 18th and 19th century furniture. After touring the Palace, visit the beautiful 18th century stables, now the Living Museum of the Horse, and enjoy a dressage demonstration.

Loire Valley Castles
12 Hours
You will be met at your hotel at 7:30 a.m. by our expert driver/guide for this full day trip to the Loire Valley. During the 2 hour drive to the first castle, Chenonceau, your guide will discuss the Renaissance period, when most of the Loire Valley castles were built, as well as the influence of Leonardo Da Vinci. Enjoy a visit to Chenonceau, with its bridge gallery on the river "Cher." Continue to Amboise for a tour of the richly furnished castle, and enjoy complimentary wine tasting in a cellar near the castle. There will be free time for lunch (at your own expense) before going to the most impressive castle of the region, Chambord. Built by King Francois the first, it is famous for its double revolution staircase and terraces. Return to Paris by 7:30 p.m.

Reims and the Champagne Estates of Epernay
10 Hours
You will be met at your hotel at 7:30 a.m. by our expert driver/guide for this full day tour combining the art of producing champagne, and the history heritage of France in Reims, a UNESCO world heritage site. After a two hour drive through vineyard studded countryside, you will have a tour of two prestigious champagne estates - Mercier*, where you will board a laser-guided train through 10 miles of underground cellars, and Moet & Chandon, the largest estate with 18 miles of cellars, where you will learn the centuries old methods of champagne production. Enjoy champagne tastings, with the opportunity to buy your favorite from the estates' shops. En route to Reims, stop in Hautvillers, the burial place of Dom Perignon. The 13th century gothic Cathedral of Notre Dame, Reims' most famous monument, is the place where French rulers were crowned for over 1,000 years. See its glorious rose stained glass window and its 15th century astronomical clock. If time allows, visit the 12th century St. Remi basilica before returning to Paris by 5:30 - 6:00 p.m. * If Mercier is closed, a substitue estate in Reims will be visited.

Normandy and the WWII Landing Beaches

You will be met at your hotel at 7:00 a.m. by our expert driver/guide for this full day trip to Normandy, a region famous for its production of cider, Calvados liquor, Camembert cheese and its many medieval cities. Begin your tour of the Normandy beaches at Juno Beach, followed by Gold and Omaha Beaches; La Pointe du Hoc; the costal defense battery of Longues du Mer; Arromanches, the artificial harbor built for D-Day; and the American cemetery and museum. Visit the Bayeux or Caen museum commemorating the Allied Normandy D-Day landings, Stroll the charming medieval streets of Bayeux, including the Gothic-Roman cathedral built in 1077 and then see the famous 11th century Bayeaux Tapestry illustrating the conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy. Return to Paris by 9:00 p.m.
